Make it a good new year… resolution

How many of you have made good of your heartfelt, life changing New Year’s Resolutions? Maybe made after one too many schooner’s or shandy’s on the stroke of midnight 2017?

You remember! Don’t you? ‘This is my year I’m going to… get fit, get healthy, eat well, take up team sport again, lose weight.’ Remember you swore on your mother’s grave, pleaded with conviction to your best mate that you ‘weren’t past it.’ Recounted (for the 15th time) just how good you were in that 1996 grand final victory. But then there was that injury. That made you stack on ‘a few kg’s?’

Getting fit, healthy and happy is simple. Notice I didn’t say easy? It’s a simple measure of how much you eat (calories in) and how much you burn (calories out). Eat less and move more and you will lose weight. Unfortunately, it’s become very confusing with companies offering all types of snake oil solutions and misinformation. People pay good money for a 3, 7 or 9 day ‘detox’ or ‘cleanse’ and expect it to cure all their ills. If it sounds too good to be true, no matter how much it costs, it probably is. Simple.

In general people are very keen to change, without having to change anything. For example, ‘I’m getting healthy by going organic!’ Thus excusing yourself to eat organic everything; popcorn, chocolate, wine, bread, pasta – anything as long as it proclaims to be organic. However, if you’re not careful to choose healthy organic foods and watch how many calories you’re consuming, then nothing’s going to change… except your shrinking bank balance.

‘I’m going on a 9 day detox!’ This sounds like a wonderful idea in theory but unfortunately, nothing in your body will have time to adapt or facilitate change in 9 measly days! Not your heart, lungs, kidneys… NOTHING! As a matter of fact, cleanses and detoxes will often cause substantial stress to the aforementioned organs.

The important thing to remember is there is no quick fix – you need to eat healthy, watch your caloric intake, treat yourself only in moderation and get moving!
