If you love the Christmas-New Year period and all the celebrations it brings but hate gaining holiday weight you’re not alone.

Many people stack on the kilos at this time of year and it’s hardly surprising when you consider all the temptation at hand, but here’s the ultimate guide on how to navigate hefty calorie consumption and avoid the Chrissie-binge-bulge.

How to turn down the volume

No, we’re not talking about Bing Crosby, we’re addressing that food elephant in the room: over-eating. If you’ve ever groaned you way over to your sister’s couch or fallen asleep after devouring leftovers while the cricket drones on Boxing Day you know what we mean. #feelingstuffed.

Here’s our top tips on how to avoid ‘OMG WAAAY TOO FULL’:

1. Eat the healthy stuff first. Summer salads are delish and if you fill up on those first, meat/carbs second, dessert small and last, you massively reduce your calorie count. So reach for the ‘salad’ that isn’t covered in mayo or sour cream before anything else. Crunch.

2. Don’t turn it into sandwiches. Eat the turkey and ham but avoid the bread. By the time you add butter and sauce you’re more than doubling your calorie count…and guess what? It’s yum enough without it.

3. Just have your faves! There’s usually a stack of dishes at a family get-together and we often feel obliged to have some of everything to satisfy the hopeful amateur chefs around the table. Our advice is to taste everything but don’t binge on everything- just have a little more of your absolute faves.

4. You don’t have to eat the chocs and nuts on the table. Honestly. And if you don’t you can leave more room for wine (!)

5. Merry Re-Giftmas. ‘Calorie dump’ Christmas foods that you know you will just eat because they’re there. This delightful concept involves giving high calorie foods away to people who aren’t worried about their weight, e.g. the single blokes next door who have highly physical jobs. (You don’t need four boxes of shortbread in the pantry. Seriously – you don’t.)
